UEFA CHAMPIONS LEAGUE: Real Madrid, Chelsea post away Champions League wins

LONDON — Karim Benzema scored two late goals to help Real Madrid beat unheralded Cypriot team APOEL 3-0 in the first leg of their Champions League quarterfinal, while Chelsea also look good for the last four after a 1-0 win in Benfica.
APOEL was looking to cause one of the biggest shocks in the history of the competition’s knockout stages but couldn’t hold out against the nine-time champions, with Benzema heading in the opener in the 74th minute from Kaka’s cross.
The Brazilian playmaker, on as a second-half substitute, scored from close range in the 82nd from compatriot Marcelo’s cross to make it 2-0 before Benzema wrapped up victory in the 90th.
Salomon Kalou grabbed a 75th-minute winner against the run of play for Chelsea — England’s sole remaining representative — in Portugal.
"It’s terrific, you couldn’t have hoped for a better result," interim Chelsea manager Roberto Di Matteo said. "Nothing is over — there is still another 90 minutes to play — but we will have home advantage."
The two other quarterfinals are played on Wednesday, with reigning champion Barcelona visiting AC Milan and Marseille at home to Bayern Munich, which hosts the final at the Allianz Arena on May 19.
Either Marseille or Bayern will surely be facing Madrid, which gave APOEL a reality check on the biggest night of the home side’s history.
After beating Lyon in the last 16, the Cypriot team was looking to add an even more famous scalp on its historic run in the Champions League but Madrid gave an assured display that could easily have yielded a bigger margin of victory.
Benzema had somehow contrived to miss an open goal from five yards out before finally opening the scoring, diving to meet Kaka’s cross from the left with a glancing header.
Kaka gave Madrid more of a cutting edge after coming on and neatly finished off good work on the left wing by fellow substitute Marcelo to end APOEL’s hopes of a comeback.
Jose Mourinho, bidding to become the first coach to win the competition with three clubs, was able to celebrate a third goal approaching injury time when Benzema connected with a perfect pass from Mesut Oezil, his 25th goal in the Champions League in just 41 matches.
Di Matteo has made an impressive start to his temporary spell in charge following the firing of Andre Villas-Boas but would have faced heavy criticism had a much-changed lineup, missing stalwarts Didier Drogba, Frank Lampard and Michael Essien, lost against Benfica.
As it was, his selection paid off, with Fernando Torres — starting in place of Drogba up front — crossing for Kalou to guide home a sidefooted finish to mark a rare appearance for the Ivory Coast forward.
"He’s come into the team after a long spell out, he got the goal and had a great game," Di Matteo said of Kalou. "I didn’t think it was a gamble but sometimes in life you have to take a little risk."
Benfica lacked composure in front of goal, with Oscar Cardozo, Bruno Cesar and Jardel all wasting good chances.

Turkmenistan 1-2 DPR Korea : FINAL RESULT

Kathmandu: Penalties came back to haunt Turkmenistan for the second successive AFC Challenge Cup with Jang Song-hyok scoring from the spot two minutes after Berdy Shamuradov had missed a penalty to give DPR Korea a 2-1 win over Turkmenistan in the 2012 final.
The match started well enough for Turkmenistan, who lost the North Koreans as the 2010 final was settled by a penalty shootout as skipper Shamuradov opened the scoring with barely 120 seconds of an intriguing encounter at the Dashrath Stadium played.
Jong Il-gwan headed the defending champions level in the 35th minute and they dominated the match until the 83rd minute when Shamuradov had a chance to seal it for the Turkmen.
But nerves got the better of him and just two minutes later Jang Song-hyok, who had given away the penalty, netted the winner for the North Koreans.
In addition to winning the AFC Challenge Cup for the second time, DPR Korea also became the first team other than hosts Australia, 2011 champions and Korea Republic, to book their place at the 2015 AFC Asian Cup.
Just two minutes after Turkmenistan had kicked-off they took the lead when Shamuradov burst through on goal and smashed an unstoppable drive past DPR Korea keeper Ri Myong-suk to give his country the lead over the North Koreans for the second successive AFC Challenge Cup final following his 32ndminute opener in the 2010 showdown.
DPR Korea came close to equalising in the 10th minute but before Pak Kwang-ryong could pull the trigger Turkmenistan defender Akmyrat Jumanazarov slid in with a perfectly-timed tackle to deny the FC Basel striker.
For all the defending champions' slick interplay they found it difficult to find their way through a well-organised Turkmenistan backline until the 35th minute when Pak Nam-chol's cross from the right met an unmarked Jong Il-gwan, whose header bulleted past Turkmen keeper Rahmanberdi Alyhanov and into the back of the net.
Pak Kwang-ryong's intelligent ball set Pak Nam-chol through on goal but the midfielder's delicate chip went just over the crossbar with four minutes of the first-half left to play.
DPR's dominance continued in the second half with 2010 AFC Young Player of the Year Jong Il-gwan coming close to his second two minutes after the restart, firing a low shot just wide after he was set up be a subtle Jang Kuk-chol back-flick.
Arslanmyrat Ammanov, a surprising omission from the starting 11 given his impressive form in the tournament thus far, rattled the crossbar with a powerful 67th minute free-kick before Jumanazarov narrowly missed connecting with another dangerous set-piece from the reigning Turkmenistan Player of the Year a minute later.
Amanov was again involved when Turkmenistan were handed a golden opportunity to take the lead when the talented 21-year-old was tripped in the box by substitute Jang Song-hyok but Shamuradov nervously fired the 83rd minute spot-kick high over the bar.
Unbelievably, DPR Korea were awarded a penalty of their own two minutes later as David Sakisov was adjudged to have hauled down Pak Kwang-ryong in the area.
And Jang Song-hyok more than made up for his earlier transgression by keeping his nerve to score the penalty that gave DPR Korea the 2012 AFC Challenge Cup title and a place in the 2015 AFC Asian Cup.

AFC CHALLENGE CUP 2012 TEAM REVIEW: Tajikistan

The Tajikistan national football team (Tajikтими миллии Тоҷикистон,Persianتیم ملی تاجیکستان‎) represents Tajikistan in association football and is controlled by the Tajikistan National Football Federation, the governing body for football in Tajikistan. Tajikistan's home ground is Pamir Stadium in Dushanbe.

History

After the split of Soviet Union, they played their first match against Uzbekistan on June 17, 1992. It was not until 1994 that the Tajikistan National Football Federation was admitted to FIFA.
Tajikistan played its first official game on April 11, 1994 in Tashkent as part of a regional tournament. They lost that game againstKazakhstan 0:1.[1] The first official competition the team entered was the Asian Nations Cup 1996 when it was seeded in the three-team Group 8 with Uzbekistan and Bahrain. Bahrain later withdrew leaving Tajikistan to play-off against their Middle Asian neighbors. Tajikistan won the first game 4:0, but were beaten in the away game 0:5 after extra time. They did not enter the World Cup qualifying competition until the France 1998 edition, recording four victories in their preliminary group stage including a 5–0 triumph over Turkmenistan, and losing only toChina, which placed them second behind their eastern neighbors but out of the competition.[2]
In a three-team qualifying section for Korea/Japan 2002, they had a record 16–0 win over Guam before losing 2–0 to Iran. After beatingBangladesh 4–0 on aggregate in the preliminary round of qualifiers for Germany 2006, they held AFC Asian Cup semi-finalists and eventual group winners Bahrain to a goalless draw on 31 March 2004.
The team won its first international tournament, the inaugural AFC Challenge Cup, in 2006, beating Sri Lanka 4–0 in Dhaka.

In 2006, Tajikistan took part in the inaugural ELF Cup in Northern Cyprus. This competition was originally intended to be for teams that were not members of FIFA; however, the organisers extended invitations to both Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan, who were both represented by their national futsal teams. Tajikistan failed to get past the group stage.
